For this 9-night knitting tour, we will focus on Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands. See Edinburgh and explore Edinburgh Castle, visit Glasgow, tour Loch Lomond and Auchindrain Township where we will enjoy a special recreation of ‘Waulking with Wool’ and visit the world-famous UNESCO heritage site of New Lanark.

Knitting activities include workshops with Emily Wessel of Tin Can Knits, Di Gilpin and Sarah Berry and in Sanquhar, we will see a demonstration of the unusual and intricate Sanquhar pattern.

Includes Johnston’s of Elgin, Verdant Works Dundee and more.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 Dublin Sightseeing
At 1 pm your tour begins at the Hotel reception and you will get the chance to take a panoramic tour of Edinburgh City. We will do a quick stop at McAree Brothers Knitting and Craft Shop where you can see their great selection of quality Scottish and British yarns. After the tour, you will have some free time for personal sightseeing. Overnight in Edinburgh, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Included

Day 2 Tin Can Knits Workshop & New Lanark
Today after breakfast the day begins with a knitting workshop hosted by Emily from Tin Can Knits following the “Strange Brew Pattern” in the Fair Isle style. The class will cover colour choices; yarn sizing and yoke construction. After the workshop, you will travel to New Lanark, an 18th century Mill and UNESCO heritage site. Overnight in New Lanark, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast included

Day 3 New Lanark Heritage Site & Sanquhar
Begin the day by exploring New Lanark, learn about its rich history and its founder Robert Owen a social reformer. Next, you will head to the A’ The Airts Centre in the village of Sanquhar famous for its geometric style pattern for a demonstration of this intricate design.
After, the rest of the evening is free for your personal sightseeing in Glasgow. Overnight in Glasgow, Bed & Breakfast included

Day 4 Glasgow City Sightseeing
This morning enjoy a sightseeing tour around Glasgow, visit the Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel which tells the story of Glasgow’s past. The afternoon is free for your own personal time to relax at the hotel, sightseeing or take an optional tour of Paisley which is famous for the Paisley Shawl. Overnight in Glasgow, Bed & Breakfast included

Day 5 Waulking with Wool & Loch Lomond
Today you will travel to Loch Lomond and Auchindrain with lots of opportunities to take some photographs of the stunning scenery along the way. Visit the Auchindrain Township and see what Highland living was once like. While here you will also learn about the technique of “Waulking”, a method of finishing newly woven tweed. Overnight in Oban, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Included

Day 6 The Highland Folk Museum & Dallas Dhu
After breakfast leaving Oban you will head for Elgin where there will be a stop along the way to explore the Highland Folk Museum. This is a great opportunity to give you a sense of how Highland people lived and worked. The next stop is the Dallas Dhu Distillery for a tour and whisky tasting and learn how Scottish Whisky is made. Overnight in Elgin, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Included

Day 7 Sarah Berry & Johnston’s of Elgin Mill
Today you will have a half-day workshop with Sarah Berry on the topic Fair Isle Knitting with naturally dyed yarn. Next, take a tour of Johnston’s of Elgin Mill. If you are not interested in the mill tour, the town of Elgin has lots of other interesting things to see and do. Overnight in Elgin, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Included

Day 8 Knockando Woolmill & Verdant Works
After breakfast, you will make your way to Dundee stopping along the way at the Knockando Woolmill which sits beautifully in the Spey Valley. This mill has occupied the space for the last 230 years. In the afternoon you will get to visit Verdant Works in Dundee and learn about Dundee’s textile heritage. Overnight in Dundee, Dinner, Bed & Breakfast Included

Day 9 Claddach Farm & Di Gilpin
Today you will spend time in the Fife region, visiting Claddach Farm to see some of their specialist sheep breeds. Continue on to Di Gilpin’s for a knitting workshop on “Gansey Patterns”. Di will also give you a History of Gansey Knitting in Scotland. Finally, make your way back to Edinburgh for a farewell dinner. Overnight in Edinburgh, Bed & Breakfast Included
